Paralysis attacks are more common in old ages. But with the present lifestyle paralysis can strike anytime. It is a condition where the muscles lose their function and may cause loss of senses. It can be temporary or permanent. It can be partial or may lead to complete failure of body function. It is mostly caused by nervous system damages connecting to the spinal cord. Certain attacks like trauma, stroke, Parkinson’s disease and other can also cause paralysis.
Medications Paralysis has no cure, but it can be treated. The treatment aims to adapt the person’s lifestyle to cope up with the life more independently. It also aims in addressing the health problems arising out of paralysis. In case of spasticity or muscle spasms, usually muscle relaxants are prescribed for medication. They are baclofen, dantrolene and tizanidine. An injection of botulinum toxin can also be given for localised spasms. These Paralysis medicines work by blocking the signals from the brain to the muscles. Spastic paralysis can also be treated by ITB therapy. This includes a dosage of Baclofen injected via a pump implanted into the spinal cord. People with neuropathic pain require amitriptyline or pregabalin as ordinary painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen do not respond. But these medications causes various side effects and the body needs to adapt to it over a period of time. The side effects could be vision problems, drowsiness and sweating. They also lead to depression and negative outlook of one’s attitude and life. Acetazolamide is used to treat familial periodic paralysis by having an oral intake of the medicine. Mobility Aids Usually paralysis renders the person immobile. Paralytic attacks on the limbs render the person immobile and the legs or arms lose their functions. In such cases, wheel chairs or orthoses are used. They help the paralyzed person to move. Paralysis treatment are usually expensive. Wheelchairs can be electric or manual. There are also conformant systems which reduce tissue deterioration and ulceration by having a measurement system that captures the seating and position of the person in the wheelchair. Some wheelchairs allow the person to standing positions and reduces the risk of pressure sores. Orthoses help the paralytic patient to support and assist the body segments usually the wrists and arms. There are also prosthetic limbs that tend to extend the limb or other body parts. They are used in paralytic treatments to ensure that the body muscle functions in a normal way and the electric pulses make these devices operate just as the brain would command the body part. Ayurvedic methods Ayurveda is also known to treat paralysis in a well-disciplined manner. They include diet control and having a disciplined life style. The person is required to eat fresh food and combined with well mixed proportions of fruits. Bitter and pungent taste should be avoided. Strict diet needs to be followed with no millets and barley. White meat or sea food needs to be eaten than red meat. Ayurvedic treatments include the natural herbs such as the winter cherry and mallow mixed to form a paste and applied on the part that is paralyzed. There are also special therapies that involve the application of medicated oils on the affected regions to cure paralysis.
